Want a few more comfortable weeks in the pool? Solar heating may be worth a look. The right fit depends on when you want to swim, how warm you want the water and where the collectors can go.
How does it work?
A typical solar pool heater sends water through collectors warmed by the sun, then back to the pool. These collectors heat water; they are different from solar panels that generate electricity. The installation may also need piping, valves, sensors, controls and pump changes.
The U.S. Department of Energy explains this arrangement in section 7.6.1 of its commercial-appliance report. That report dates from 2016, so its cost estimates are not a current installation quote.
What can you get from it?
- Heat from the sun. Suitable collectors can supply some of the heat another heater would otherwise provide.
- More comfortable swimming. A system designed for the months you want to use it may help extend your season when conditions allow.
- Less purchased heating energy. Results depend on the heat delivered and how the whole system runs. The pump and controls can still use electricity.
Where are the limits?
Shade, wind, collector area and direction all matter. So do the weather and your target temperature. A suitable cover helps limit evaporation and heat loss, but it does not remove the need to size the system properly. The IEA pool-heating overview covers the main parts and siting considerations.
Solar heating also needs maintenance. Ask about collector inspections, pump and control care, and the manufacturer’s cold-weather procedure. Do not expect the same temperature on demand in every season.
Ask these questions before you buy
- Which swimming months and temperature goals is this sized for?
- What did the site assessment show?
- Will the pump, plumbing or controls need changes?
- Who handles mounting, roof work, installation and required approvals?
- How will performance be checked, and what are the maintenance and warranty terms?
- Does the full quote include any backup heating?
Compare systems using the same heating goal. Savings and payback depend on your pool and use; a higher resale value is not something to count on.
